Though we may not always notice, trees go through incredible transitions every few months. As the seasons change, so does our canopy. Here is an overview of the transformation a tree experiences throughout the year:
Spring
Spring is typically known as a time of rebirth. During this season, trees react to the increased hours of daylight and increasing temperature. New leaves begin to grow and the production of chlorophyll begins. New wood emerges to protect the tree. Roots actively seek water and absorb nutrients.
Trees that flower during mid- to late summer should be pruned in early spring or during winter. Ask a tree expert or arborist for pruning advice.
Summer
During summer, leaves use chlorophyll to capture photons from light. They convert this into energy to produce sugar that acts as “food” for the plant. This is a process called photosynthesis. Some of this food used for the growth of the plant and the rest is kept in the plant’s roots to be used the following spring.
Fall
Autumn is usually known for beautifully-coloured foliage. In fall, leaves lose their chlorophyll, stopping the photosynthesis process. The loss of chlorophyll reveals the presence of other pigments, showing red, yellow, and orange in leaves. Eventually, the leaves that no longer have chlorophyll begin to fall. Trees usually begin their decaying process at this time.
Pruning is not recommended during fall because the spores of decay fungi spread intensely in autumn, and cuts on trees heal slower.
Winter
As temperatures drop, trees begin to prepare for dormancy. A tree’s cells begin to be infused with lipids that help prevent them from dehydrating and survive the winter. A protective scar tissue is formed where leaves were attached on the branch. This is called the “abscission zone.” If they kept their leaves, the water in them would freeze and cause damage the leaves, leaving the tree vulnerable to fungi and bacteria.
Tree care varies per season. For example, a young tree needs more water in summer than in fall. Learn how to care for your trees to keep them strong and healthy. If you need help, call a professional tree care service.
