The Best Methods for Tree Stump Removal

Tree removal is more involved than simply cutting down a tree. The stump must also be removed, which involves getting the complete tree out so there is no chance for regrowth, and to prevent safety hazards. Removing a tree stump requires time, patience, and often special equipment or chemicals. The amount of time needed varies depending on size and location of the stump and the availability of equipment.

A homeowner might want to seriously consider to hiring a professional because the job can often take a long time and be exhausting, but if you want to try the DIY approach, here are some tips:

Rent a Stump Grinder

You’ll need a stump grinder from a local rental center or hardware store. Cost will probably be around $200 for a single day rental. You’ll also need a chainsaw, shovel, axe, pry tools, rope or chain for pulling, and a friend to help.

How to Do It

  • Cut the stump as close to ground level as possible.
  • Use your shovel to expose the roots and cut them using a chainsaw or an ax.
  • Using your pry tools and rope or chain, start prying up the tree stump.
  • Cut additional roots as they are exposed.
  • Continue prying/pulling the stump and cutting exposed roots. Eventually the stump will separate. Dispose of the stump in accordance with your local regulations.
  • Have extra dirt on hand to completely fill the hole.

Chemical Tree Stump Remover

Using chemicals to remove a tree is the least labour-intensive method but you need to check local regulations for which chemicals are allowed. The chemicals can be very caustic; use extreme care when handling them. Your local gardening center or hardware store can let you know which products to use. Strictly follow the manufacturer’s directions.

Using chemicals requires less physical labour but still involves hard work. After applying the stump remover, the stump must be dug out of the ground. This will be easier because of the chemicals and will likely eliminate the need for a stump grinder. You’ll still need pry tools, shovels, cutting tools, and a way to dispose of the stump. The method is the same as outlined above.
